February 17, 2005 Obituary Dr. Damian John Jelso, 65, was a resident of Albuquerque, NM and passed away Monday, February 14, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Grace Jelso; children, John Frank Jelso and wife, Desiree, Anthony Joseph Jelso and wife, Janay, Gina Marie Heise, and Laura Joanne Smith and husband, Stephen; grandchildren, Hannah Grace and Zachary Ryan Heise, William Augustine, Nicholas Damiano and Thomas Wayne Smith, Jayden Cole Jelso and Sydney Damiana Jelso. He is also survived by his beloved mother, Dorothy Jelso; sisters, Carolann Dungan and husband, John W. and Judith H. Taylor and husband, Larry. He was preceded in death by his father, John Frank Jelso. Damian was an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who served the Albuquerque community for 35 years. He was a UNM graduate in Biology and attended Loyola Dental School in Chicago, where he did his postgraduate work (and where he met his lovely bride, Joanne). Damian did his oral surgery residency in Cleveland, OH, and then returned home to New Mexico to open his practice. Among his many contributions, he served as President of the American Cancer Society's New Mexico Chapter. A racquetball enthusiast, he dedicated 20 years to developing and cultivating the World Senior Racquetball Championships as a board member and vice president. In 2000, he fulfilled a lifelong dream and traveled to Africa. By far the most satisfying of his activities, however, was simply being "Papa" to his grandchildren. He was greatly blessed by the arrival of his sixth grandchild, Jayden, the night before his last surgery, and he was warmly awaiting the arrival of his seventh, Sydney Damiana who blessed us all on Easter Sunday, March 27th. A man of faith, a professional man of integrity, and a generous son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend; Damian will be greatly missed, though his family remains consoled in the joyful hope that they will see him again, when God "will wipe away every tear from their eyes" (Rev. 21:4). A Prayer Vigil was held on Thursday, February 17, 2005, 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, and a Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, February 18, 2005, 8:30 a.m., at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church. Interment took place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. |
